Across the nation, William Cooper collects over 1800 signatures calling for King George V to intervene in Australia to prevent the extinction of the Aboriginal race. The signatories also request better living conditions and Aboriginal representation in parliament. Cooper sends the document to Prime Minister Lyons to pass on to the King. Cabinet decides that ‘no good purpose’ would be gained by sending it.

The Aboriginal Progressive Association (APA) is founded by William Ferguson and Jack Patten with Pearl Gibbs as Secretary. It calls for full citizenship rights and Aboriginal representation. A year later the APA, joined by the Australian Aborigines’ League, organises a ‘Day of Mourning’ on Australia Day in protest against 150 years of ‘callous treatment by white men’.
